Grant Overview
Action for Healthy Kids in partnership with the Kellogg’s Corporate Citizenship Fund is giving schools the chance to receive a $1000 mini-grant to support healthy eating and physical activity at school. In addition to funding, grantees will receive project support from national and state Action for Healthy Kids volunteers and staff.
Action for Healthy Kids is the nation’s leading nonprofit and largest volunteer network fighting childhood obesity and undernourishment by working with schools to improve nutrition and physical activity to help our kids learn to eat right, be active every day and be ready to learn. We provide expertise, volunteers, programs and resources nationwide through a unique collaboration of more than 11,000 members – professionals, parents, educators, community volunteers, business leaders and students – in partnership with professional associations, government agencies and corporations. The Action for Healthy Kids New England Regional Network is comprised of the six New England Action for Healthy Kids teams (CT, NH, ME, MA, RI, VT).
These grants will :
- Empower parents to be change agents in their school
- Support School Healthy Advisory Councils and wellness teams
- Foster implementation of local wellness policies in the areas of physical activity, physical education, and nutrition
Grant Requirements
- Parents will be actively engaged and/or lead project implementation during the second half of the 2009-2010 School Year. Projects can include one of the following:
- Implement two Making Better Food Choices and two Moving More Challenges from Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge
- Implement the Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge Challenge Course
- Implement two ReCharge! Energizing After School activities
Organized parent groups, such as PTA/PTO are encouraged to take the lead on the grant application. However, it is also appropriate for a school staff person (administrator, school nurse, school nutrition services manager/director, or health/physical education teacher) to submit this grant opportunity in order to better engage parents in school wellness. The school/district will (re)establish/strengthen a school-/district-based Health and Wellness Team (may also be referred to as a School Health Advisory Council) with active parent involvement
- School administration will support the implementation of the project (signed memorandum of understanding by school administration, see attached)
- The School Health Advisory Council and/or School Wellness Team identifies a strong project leader to ensure full implementation and delivery of project.
- Parents and Wellness Team members join the Action for Healthy Kids network
- At least three representatives from the project team (minimum of one parent representative per team) will attend a spring event (date and location TBD) to share successes, brainstorm around barriers and inform Action for Healthy Kids’ long-term parent engagement strategy. The event will bring parent teams and community leaders together with administrators, teachers, and policy makers to share knowledge about improving physical activity, physical education, and the nutrition environment in schools in Spring 2010.
- Project Team will complete end-of-year grant report provided by Action for Healthy Kids.

Funded schools will receive ongoing support and technical assistance during the grant implementation from Action for Healthy Kids staff and volunteers.
Review Criteria
The national Action for Healthy Kids organization, in partnership with the New England Regional Network, will make the final determination of school buildings and districts funded. Grants will be reviewed using the application guidelines and the instructions for completing the mini-grant proposal. The application review will be based on the following criteria.
ü Compliance with application guidelines.
ü Detailed project narrative.
ü Measurable and appropriate goals, objectives and action steps
ü Appropriate and detailed budget
ü Application is legible and submitted on time
Grants will be reviewed by members of Action for Healthy Kids state Teams and national Partner organizations.
